Edna Viola Willis of St. Clair, MO, departed this life in St. Clair on January 19, 2010, having reached the age of ninety-two years, nine months and twelve days. Edna was born in Richwoods, MO on April 7, 1917, daughter of Howard Oran Whitehead and Ruth Ellen VanLeer. On July 3, 1936, she was united in marriage to Charles Walter Willis and three children came to bless this union.
Edna is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Willis of Sullivan, MO; by her daughters-in-law, Joyce Willis of St. Clair and Janet Willis Toole of Union, MO; by one brother, Kenneth Roller and wife, Janet, of Sullivan; by one sister, Virginia Snow and husband, Don, of St. Clair; by seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; by one sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Howard Whitehead and Ruth Roller; by her step-father, Henry Roller; by her husband, Charles Willis; by two sons, Don Willis and Carl “Dink” Willis; by three brothers, Paul L. York, Sr., Robert Roller, and Harold “Odie” Roller; and by one sister, Doris Schatz.
Edna was a Christian of the Baptist faith and in recent years, had attended the First Baptist Church of Bourbon, MO. As a young woman, Edna began her working career in the shoe manufacturing industry, working at both Deb Shoe Company in St. Clair and Carmo Shoe Company in Union, collectively working thirty years. After retiring from the shoe factories, Edna began her career with Hardee’s and worked from 1990 until January of 2008, finally retiring at the age of ninety-one. Edna had enjoyed many hobbies and interests during her life, including listening to gospel singing, baking and playing bingo. Edna’s favorite pastime was visiting with people and she was often seen sitting on her front porch swing, waving at her friends. Edna was a kind and sweet lady who was happiest when she was doing for others. Each of her many grandchildren held a special place in her heart just as she did in their hearts.
A loving and devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great and great-great aunt, cousin and friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair with the Rev. Ted Hurley officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union, MO. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bourbon, MO.
