Leona Sullivan of St. Clair, MO, departed this life in Washington, MO, on March 29, 2013, having reached the age of ninety-seven years, six months and two days. Leona was born in Sullivan, MO, on September 27, 1915, daughter of Andrew Jackson Ellison and Eva Rose Ellison nee Hulsey. On June 29, 1934, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Edward Sullivan and two children came to bless this union.
Leona is survived by her son, Dale Sullivan and wife, Judy, of St. Clair; by three grandchildren, Bradley Sullivan and wife, Shelley, Craig Sullivan and wife, Deborah, and Pamela Nance and husband, Randy, all of St. Clair; by one brother, Eddie Ellison of St. Clair; by seven great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Eva Ellison; by her husband, Lawrence Sullivan; by one infant daughter, Joyce Marie Sullivan; by four brothers, Charles “Monroe” Ellison, John Ellison, Walter Ellison and Floyd Ellison; and by two sisters, Virginia Pruitt and Edith Kupferer.
Leona was a devoted Christian and long time member of First Baptist Church in St. Clair. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and active in Sunday school. She lived in the St. Clair area throughout her life and during her working years had been employed at International Shoe Company, Deb Shoe Company, Missouri Knife Factory, as a cook at R-13 School District and at Pursley’s Laundramat, all in St. Clair, MO. Leona remained active for most of her life and enjoyed many hobbies and interests. She enjoyed crocheting, loved to clean her house and was often seen working in her yard, raking leaves and caring for her flowers. She was a kind and giving lady and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. Nothing made her happier than time spent with her family and she was happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Much love has been created and shared and many joyful memories were made that all the family will cherish forever.
A loving and devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great and great-great-aunt, cousin and friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO with the Reverends Cliff Day and Ben Kingston officiating. Interment was in Virginia Mines Cemetery, Lonedell, MO. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, Lonedell, MO or to First Baptist Church, St. Clair, MO.
