OBITUARY

Edith Nora Meek of St. Clair, MO, departed this life on September 13, 2012, having reached the age of ninety-five years, one month and twenty-two days. Edith was born in St. Louis, MO on July 22, 1917, daughter of Walter C. Nelson and Matilda Nelson nee Dahms, known to most as Tillie. On October 1, 1939 she was united in marriage to Horace Ivan Meek, known to most as Jim, and three children came to bless this union.

Edith is survived by her son, Richard Meek and wife, Ruth, of Jonesboro, AR; by her daughter-in-law, Marjorie Meek of St. Clair; by her grandchildren, Steven Meek and wife, Jami, of Lees Summit, MO, Jacki Wood and husband, Gary, of DeSoto, MO and Zachary Meek and wife, Anna, of Kansas City, MO; by her step-grandchildren, Michael Ortmeyer and wife, Michell, of Warrensburg, MO, Mark Ortmeyer and wife, Lorie of St. Clair and Marian Baker of Potosi, MO; by her great-grandchildren, Olivia and Henry Meek of Lees Summit; by her special niece, Gloria Klien and husband, Jerry, of St. Louis, MO; by one sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Matilda Nelson; by her husband, Horace “Jim” Meek; by her son, Kenneth Meek; by her daughter, Jo Ann Meek; by her daughter-in-law, Janet Meek; and by her sister, Margaret Fleming.

Edith was a devoted Christian and long time member of First Baptist Church in St. Clair. She had been an active member of the church in years pasts, having been a member of KITS, WMU and other church functions. She prayed daily throughout her life and spent a great deal of time visiting home bound or ill church members and friends. As a young woman, she had worked in the kitchen as the baker at the Reavis School in the Affton School District. She was employed as a sales clerk and assistant manager for Woolworth’s in St. Louis and later at Ben Franklin in Affton, MO. She enjoyed many hobbies and interests during her life, including gardening and feeding the hummingbirds. She was a talented seamstress and had enjoyed making her clothes, as well as doll clothes for the granddaughters. Many wonderful memories have been created and the love shared will never be forgotten.

A kind and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair with the Rev. Phil Turner officiating. Private committal was held at New St. Marcus Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in St. Clair, MO.
