John Robert Moroney of St. Clair, MO, departed this life in Washington, MO, on March 10, 2012, having reached the age of seventy-three years, five months and fifteen days. John was born in Sparta, IL, on September 22, 1938, son of Sylvester Harry Moroney and Jeannie Moroney nee Mount. On October 5, 1957, he was united in marriage to Virginia Mary Velker and four children came to bless this union.
John is survived by his son, John P. Moroney and wife, Jeannine, of Union, MO; by three daughters, Connie Wachter and husband, Ed, of Washington, MO, Joanne Krehmeyer and husband, John, of St. Charles, MO and Terry Molitor and husband, Mark, of St. Clair, MO; by seven grandchildren, Patrick, Caitlin and Natalie Moroney of Union, MO, Megan Wieda and fiancée, Kenny Powers, of Washington, MO, Nicholas and Michael Wachter of Washington and Travis Molitor and wife, Jennifer, of Washington; by one brother, Thomas Moroney and wife, Deana, of Girard, IL; by one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Jeannie Moroney; by his wife, Virginia Moroney; and by one brother, William Moroney.
John was a Christian of the Catholic faith and had most recently attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Union, MO. John was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy, entering April 22, 1957 and receiving his honorable discharge on March 10, 1961. He was an accountant by trade and had been employed for thirty years by McCarthy Brothers Construction Company in Ladue, MO. After his retirement he worked for several years at the St. Clair Parks Department in St. Clair, MO. John enjoyed many hobbies and interests during his life. He was a sports fan and enjoyed watching Cardinal baseball games. He liked working on his computer and “fiddling with electronic gadgets.” John loved animals and enjoyed the companionship of his little Westie, G.W. Nothing made John happier than spending time with his children and grandchildren and he was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild. His wonderful smile and keen sense of humor are traits that his family will always remember with a smile.
A kind and loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and treasured friend, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO. Funeral mass was held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Union, MO with Monsignor Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment with full military honors was held in Anaconda Cemetery, St. Clair, MO. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, Union, MO.
