Elsie Marie Cox of Union, MO departed this life in St. Clair on December 26, 2010, having reached the age of eighty-four years and three months. Elsie was born in St. Clair, MO on September 26, 1926, daughter of Charles Evert Cahill and Bertha May Cahill nee Bacon. On April 18, 1944 she was united in marriage to Leslie Roy Cox, Sr. and three children came to bless this union.
Elsie is survived by two sons, Leslie R. Cox, Jr. of Union and Mark Cox and wife, Lisa, of Union; by her son-in-law, Fred Arflack of Union; by two sisters, Hazel Miller of Sullivan and Helen Jones of St. Clair; by nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bertha Cahill; by her husband, Leslie R. Cox, Sr.; by her daughter, Gloria Arflack; by three brothers, Steve Cahill, Walter Cahill and Arthur Cahill; by one sister, Mamie Chambers.
Elsie was a Christian and long time member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, St. Clair. She loved quilting with the ladies at church. During her working years she had employed for many years in the shoe manufacturing industry, working at International Shoe Company, Deb Shoe and Carmo Shoe Company. In more recent years, she was employed as a custodian for the R-13 School District. Crocheting and quilting were Elsie’s favorite pastimes and many hand made items will be treasured family heirlooms for her family. Above all else Elsie was happiest when she was spending time with her grandchildren as each one held a special place in her heart.
A sweet, kind and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great and great-great aunt, cousin and treasured friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation was held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair. Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in St. Clair with the Rev. John Dover officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union, MO. Memorials may be made to Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, St. Clair, MO.
