Daniel Robert Phillips, Jr. of Union, MO, departed this life at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, having reached the age of sixty-six years, one month and twenty-eight days. Daniel was born in Washington, MO, on May 8, 1944, son of Daniel Robert Phillips, Sr. and Norma Rae Phillips nee Nappier. On January 27, 1968, he was united in marriage to Jonell Edith Stahlman and two children came to bless this union.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Jonell Phillips of Union; by his mother, Norma Phillips of St. Clair; by his daughter, Dena Grus and husband, Robert, of St. Clair; by his son, Todd Phillips and wife, Amy, of Union; by six grandchildren, Michael Phillips of Union, Savannah and Ryan Scott of St. James, MO, Derick Grus of St. Clair and Jaret and Chet Phillips of Union; by his sister, Barbara Craig and husband, Dan, of Houston, TX; by his special cousin, Ted Phillips, of St. Clair; by brothers and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Daniel was preceded in death by his father, Daniel R. Phillips, Sr.; by his sister, Harriet Cartwright; and by his niece, Cheryl Henry.

Daniel was a Christian and member of Green Mound Baptist Church in St. Clair. He was proud to have served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army, entering on June 24, 1965 and receiving his honorable discharge on June 6, 1967. He was a retiree of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1839 of St. Louis, MO. He was a millwright by trade and was employed by Alberici Construction in St. Louis, MO for most of his working years. He was also a member of Easter Lodge 575, AF & AM of St. Clair, MO. Daniel loved spending time outdoors and was happiest when working around the house on his Ford Jubilee tractor. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix and his family affectionately referred to him as Mr. Fix It. Fishing was his passion and many wonderful memories were created on fishing trips. Daniel was an avid reader and he enjoyed watching western movies. He was happiest when surrounded by his grandchildren.

A kind and loving husband, son, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, nephew, uncle, great and great-great uncle, cousin and treasured friend, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair with the Rev. Bill Luttrell officiating. Interment was in Green Mound Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to Green Mound Baptist Church or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of St. Louis for Seth’s Soldiers.
