Fern Verlee Smith of Cuba, MO, formerly of St. Clair, MO, departed this life on February 13, 2020, having reached the age of ninety years, nine months and three days. Fern was born in Belleville, IL, on May 10, 1929, daughter of William Harmon Dixon and Cleonia Sarah Dixon nee McEwen. As a young woman she was united in marriage to Clarence Leo Cates and two children came to bless this union. She was later married to James Fischer and one child came to bless this union. On April 14, 1977, she was united in marriage to Roscoe Dean Smith and their families were joined as one.

Fern is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Courtois of St. James, MO, and Norma Plymale and husband, Robert, of Leasburg, MO; by seven grandchildren, Theodore Schuermann, known to all as Ted, and fiancée, Lena, of St. Clair, MO, Matt Courtois of St. James, J. Kathryn Delmain, known to all as Kathy, and husband, Dennis, of Villa Ridge, MO, Mark Courtois and wife, Kathy, of St. James, Christopher Courtois and wife, Sheli, of St. James, Stacie Plymale of Leasburg and Wesley Plymale of Leasburg; by ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, William and Cleonia Dixon; by her husband, Roscoe Smith; by her daughter, Cleta Darlene Rhoden, known to all as Darlene; by her son-in-law, Ric Courtois; by her brothers, Lyman, Everett and Darrell Dixon, and by her sisters, Hazel Maddy and Cleta Lewis.

Fern was a Christian, having been raised in the Baptist faith and believing in the Lord as her Savior. During her working career she was a machine operator at Wolff Shoe Company in Union, MO, retiring after many years of service to the company. Going trout fishing and camping were two of her favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed embroidering and crocheting. What meant most to her was time spent with her family. Her children and grandchildren held a very special place in her heart, as she did in their hearts. The love they shared and many precious memories they created will cherished by them all.

A kind and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother, aunt, great and great-great-aunt, cousin and treasured friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM Sunday, February 16, 2020, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO, with the Rev. Roger Johnson officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Lonedell, MO. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Cemetery.
