John McKinley Smith of Union, MO, formerly of Lonedell, MO, departed this life at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on December 6, 2018, having reached the age of eighty-two years and three months. John was born in Leeper, MO on September 6, 1936, son of Jesse McKinley Smith and Ona Bell Smith nee Brown. As a young man he was united in marriage and blessed to have one daughter. On October 26, 1978, he was united in marriage to Harvetta Lee Freeman nee Hunter and their families were joined as one.

John is survived by his wife, Harvetta Smith of Union, MO; by one daughter, Debbie Moore of Fenton, MO; by Haravetta's son, Randy Freeman of New Haven, MO; by two grandchildren, Hailey and Holly Moore, both of Fenton; by one sister, Maralea Brady and husband, Raymond, of Sand Springs, OK; by his special caregiver, Josie Hugyez of Union; by nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Smith and Ona Smith Brown; by his brother, Walter Odell, and by three sisters, Opal Odell, Gladys Usery and Syreda Heins, known to most as Sue.

John was a Christian, having been raised in the Baptist faith and believing in the Lord as his Savior. He was proud to have served his country in the United States Army, enlisting on November 9, 1959 and receiving his honorable discharge on February 5, 1962. He had attended trade school and became a Master Lithographer. For most of his working career he was employed by Buxton Skinner Printing Company in St. Louis, MO, retiring after thirty-five years of service to the company. He was a proud member and retiree of the Graphic Communications International Union and the St. Louis Lithographers Union. As a young man he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing and target shooting. He later loved to travel with the family in their fifth-wheel trailer and he and Harvetta had visited most of the fifty states, plus Canada and Mexico. He also liked listening to country music and feeding the birds and hummingbirds. He cherished the time spent with family and the many precious memories they created will forever live in their hearts.

A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great and great-great-uncle, cousin and treasured friend, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
