Lawrence Andrew Davis of St. Clair, MO, departed this life at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, having reached the age of eighty-nine years and nineteen days. Lawrence was born in St. Louis, MO, on July 26, 1929, son of Andrew Raymond Davis and Alice Elsie Davis nee Phillips. On February 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Hinson and four children came to bless this union.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Betty Davis of St. Clair, MO; by his daughter, Terry Durgin and husband, Geoff, of St. Clair; by three sons, Bruce Davis and wife, Diane, of St. Clair, Steve Davis and wife, Mary, of Sullivan, MO and Tim Davis of Lonedell, MO; by one sister, Fern Cordia of St. Louis, MO; by eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Alice Davis, and by four brothers, Paul, Murel, Donald and Dorsie Davis.
Lawrence was a Christian and long time devoted member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in St. Clair, MO. Helping out at the church in whatever capacity was needed was always a priority to Lawrence. He was proud to have served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army, entering April 5, 1951 and receiving his honorable discharge on March 19, 1953. After his discharge he began his career with General Motors in St. Louis, MO, retiring after thirty years of service to the company. He was also a retiree of the United Auto Workers, Local 25 of St. Louis. Lawrence was an active man with many talents. When he wasn't at work, he worked as his own contractor, doing concrete flat work for many people in the area. He was a handyman and did many remodeling projects. Lawrence loved the outdoors, especially spending time at his lake. Many family gatherings were held there and many wonderful memories were created. Favorite pastimes included studying history, visiting old grist mills and spending time with his grandchildren.
A loving, kind and devoted husband, father, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great and great-great-uncle, cousin and friend, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation was held after 2:00 PM on Friday, August 17, 2018, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO. Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in St. Clair, MO, with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Interment with full military honors was held at Elmwood Cemetery, Lonedell, MO. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund.
