Vernon Lee Cox, Sr. of St. Clair, MO, departed this life in St. Clair on August 15, 2017, having reached the age of eighty-two years, one month and twenty-one days. Vernon was born in Anaconda, MO, on June 24, 1935, son of William Cleo Cox and Gertie Alma Cox nee Busse. On August 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Viola Ritchey, known to all as Peggy, and four children came to bless this union.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Peggy Cox of Sullivan, MO; by two sons, Vernon L. Cox, Jr. and wife, Nettie, of Sullivan and John E. Cox and wife, Ruby, of Sullivan; by his daughter, Vicky Pelton and husband, Carl, of Sullivan; by two grandchildren, Jessica Angell of Mineral Point, MO and Andrea Pelton of Sullivan; by one great-grandchild, Aubree Angell of Mineral Point; by his special friends, Clay Young and wife, Robin, of Lake St. Louis, MO; by brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gertie Cox; by one son, Charles L. Cox; by his brother, William J. Cox, and by his sister, Peggy Bartnett.

Vernon was a Christian of the Baptist faith and had been attending New Hope Baptist Church in Sullivan, MO. During his working years, he was employed as an instructor at East Central Community College in Union, MO, teaching welding for sixteen years. He was a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and Elks Lodge #2651 in St. Clair, MO. He was proud to have served his country in the Army National Guard, entering April 28, 1955 and receiving his honorable discharge on April 27, 1958. Vernon had enjoyed many hobbies and interests including making jewelry, working in his garden, hunting and fishing. Vernon was a very giving man and he liked sharing the produce he raised and giving jewelry to family and friends. He had remained an avid reader throughout his life and always stayed abreast of current events. His children and grandchildren held a special place in his heart and the love they shared and many precious memories they created will live in their hearts forever.

A kind and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and treasured friend, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held at 6:00 PM Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO, with the Rev. Jim Watson officiating and family members speaking. A private committal will take place at a later date at Mt. Zion Cemetery in St. Clair, MO. Memorials may be made to Elks Lodge #2651 Scholarship Fund.
