Lela Belle Showen of St. Clair, MO, departed this life in Creve Coeur, MO, on February 7, 2010, having reached the age of eighty-eight years, one month and sixteen days. Lela was born in St. Clair on December 22, 1921, daughter of Jeremiah Cornelius Pierce and Trecia Matilda Pierce nee Short. On January 7, 1942, she was united in marriage to Curtis Edward Showen and two daughters came to bless this union.
Lela is survived by her daughters, Diana Cowan and husband, Herb, of Temple, TX and Sharon R. Light and husband, Carl, Sr., of St. Clair; by three grandchildren, Carl Light, Jr., known to most as J.R., and wife, Lisa, of Wildwood, MO, Heather Morgan and husband, David, of Waxahachie, TX and Lori Lipscomb and husband, Dave, of Chesterfield, MO; by four great-grandchildren, Caleb and Hannah Morgan, Ava Light and Madeline Lipscomb; by one brother, Roy Pierce and wife, Olga, of St. Clair; by one sister, Pauline Boyster of St. Clair; by brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents, Jeremiah and Trecia Pierce; by her husband, Curtis Showen; and by one brother, Jerry Pierce, Jr.
Lela was a devoted Christian and life long member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in St. Clair. She also served the church for many years as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary at the church. As a young woman, she was employed at International Shoe Company in St. Clair. While her girls were young, she was a devoted homemaker and in later years, she worked as the bookkeeper for Frimel and Trentman Lumber Company in St. Clair. Lela was a fabulous cook and was happiest when all her family was gathered around her dinner table. Spending time with her children and grandchildren was her favorite pastime and her sweet and gentle nature will be missed by them all.
A devoted and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great and great-great-aunt, cousin and friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in St. Clair with the Rev. Johnny Dover officiating. Interment was in Bethel Cemetery, Lonedell, MO. The Showen family was served by Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, MO.
