OBITUARY

James Howard Shrum, known to most as Jim, of Lonedell, MO, departed this life at his home on March 27, 2017, having reached the age of ninety-two years, three months and thirteen days. Jim was born in East St. Louis, MO, on December 14, 1924, son of Robert Earl Shrum and Effie Juanita Shrum nee Hilton. On December 31, 1987, he was united in marriage to Bunice Gale Thrower nee Gambill, known to all as Gale, and they were blessed to have twenty-four years together.

Jim is survived by his dear friend and caregiver, Samantha Konieczny and husband, Mark, of St. Clair, MO; by two step-sons, John L. Thrower and wife, Diana, of Troy, MO, and Bryan Thrower of Lonedell, MO; by nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Effie Shrum; by his wife, Gale Shrum; by two step-sons, Mark Thrower and Joseph Thrower, known to many as Smoke; by two brothers, William and Robert Shrum, and by one sister, Mary Alice Thomas.

Jim was a Christian and had been a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lonedell since 1966. He was proud to have served his country during World War II as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, entering November 9, 1942 and receiving his honorable discharge on August 14, 1944. During his working years he was employed by National Maritime Union as a deck hand on the barges, retiring after twenty years with the company. After retiring and moving to Lonedell, Jim began raising Herford cattle. He enjoyed farming and caring for his home and property. He enjoyed the fellowship of his many friends at church and in the community.

A kind and loving friend, step-father, step-grandfather and great-grandfather, uncle, great and great-great-uncle, cousin and friend, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
